Spinning: Lily Allen - Everything's Just Wonderful
I'm not normally a fan of Allen's, but there's something inanely catchy about the abovementioned song. Maybe it's the happy-schnappy melody and chorus juxtaposed against the real content of the song. "It's just the way the cookie crumbles,", folks. That's the way it is and we're all empty shells drifting along the stupid sea of mindless trends. I love the way she croons "Oh yes, I'm fine. Everything's just wonderful; I'm having the time of my life." I can picture her singing that AND rolling her eyes at the same time. Or, having that pseudo- oh yeah, I'm OK, I'm all right look. OK. Enough about that. I'm in one of those cynical moods again.
-----------------------
I went back to my alma mater to get my graduation certificate (booklet, more like). Everything was in place, except that little section where we were required to submit our own take on what we achieved over those 2 years in college. We sound like we really, really are very fond of curt sentences and single-sentence paragraphs. I thought they only did that in the newspapers. But that's just me being picky. No one really looks at that segment, ladies and gentlemen! The testimonial really made me sound like an ace student, though.
That aside, I felt really out of place in my alma mater's school compound. Walking in dressed in home-clothes and slippers, the compound's diligent security guard promptly halted me and demanded to know what my business was in this school.
"Ex-student," I replied.
"All right. I trust you. Return this to me after you're done."
"OK."
He then handed me a little green tag labelled "Visitor". I stared at it for a bit; I think he got a little impatient when I stood there a minute too long looking at the tag and wondering what that implied of my identity in that school. Refusing to hang it around my neck, I went to get what I wanted to get from the administrative wing and walked out once I was done, handing the tag back to him.
"Finished? Settled everything?" he asked.
"Yeah." Again I stood there for a while, pondering the nuances behind his words. But I didn't dare stay too long, lest he would ask me what the heck I was doing, loitering in the compound.
He probably didn't mean it, but he just showed me what my identity was, with regard to my alma mater. I'm no longer under its shelter; I'm a part of its history, it's past. Funny how fast things move. Dynamic, indeed. I think this was what I meant when
I said I wished I'd left a mark in school.Oh yeah, it's just the way the cookie crumbles.
