How could you not like Oompa Loompas?!
Spinning: some song by Gigi Leung
Why ah, why?
Out of all of my friends who have watched the famous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie (cue 'WILLY WONKA! WILLY WONKA!' entrance song), almost a staggering 80% do NOT - I repeat, DO NOT like Oompa Loompas! How could they!
Just because they (Or he. Or it.) have funny coiffures? Please, I've seen worse. Take a look around you, people, you call your friend's cockerel-styled, carefully gelled hair a HAIRDO?!
Or is it because they wear skin tight leotards... which aren't exactly flattering?
Or is it because they all look the same?! If they can accept identical twins, triplets, quadruplets, quinteplets, sextets, then why can't they accept oompa loompas?
C'mon people... give the Oompa Loompas a break. Actor Deep Roy played him, by the way, and according to imdb.com, each oompa loompa features him doing an entirely different set of actions.
When I read the original book written by Roald Dahl, I'd always pictured the Oompa Loompas to be like Lemmings - cute, mischievous, and damn intelligent. I thought the movie chose to portray the Oompa Loompas in a very interesting way - very clever, and caused me to choke on my own laughter when I first saw them. I think I have a soft spot for such weird, quirky humour. Guess you guys don't share the same brand of humour as me.
Oh well.
Anyway, the movie 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' was above average, but it did not reach the standard I was hoping for (i.e. fantastic/wonderful). After all, I chose to watch it because I was a faithful reader of Roald Dahl's books when I was still a child (sometime when I was still in Primary school.) It didn't quite stir up the magic I felt while reading the original book... but then again it might've been because I've grown up and decided that chances of me finding a golden ticket in my life would be pretty low. Really spoilsport-ish, but that's the truth, isn't it?
Nonetheless the artistic direction of the film was really great ... Just what I'd thought Willy Wonka's factory would be like. The soundtrack I would have to say was pretty original as well (not the lyrics - the music in itself) What surprised me though was the bits of dark humour peeking out from all over the film. There were rather morbid moments - especially the melting puppets which was reminiscent of a scene from horror film Chucky, and well, let's just say Mr. Willy Wonka had a terrible childhood. Which was probably the reason why he looked really nonchalant when Augustus Gloop was inching up the ... machine that decided that Gloop was really chocolate.
I'm giving away too many spoilers. So before I spoil the whole thing for you guys, I would say, go watch this, and give the Oompa Loompas a break.
