so, if the world was upside down...
Spinning: Dreams - The Cranberries
Taking on the Psychology Elective was a good choice. It has ignited a few burning questions- not just about why humans behave in a particular manner - but also about my previous beliefs. My values, what I was taught. I'm not going to blow this out of proportion though - I take it with a pinch of salt, and you probably should do so if you're reading this at all.
My dad used to tell me that people weren't born smart. He said hard work was what got my peers no 1. in class. Yes, he is a very academically driven person. That being said, I'd took his words very seriously - and I'd worked like a cow to get a pass -_- for all my academic years. He was, unfortunately, proven wrong - at psychology class my teacher had talked about how different degrees of exposure to stuff when one was young would affect his behaviour. Somehow we managed to ask - "So, why is it some people don't study for a certain subject and they can get freakingly good marks?" To which my teacher answered, "Oh, some people are born with an inclination to certain subjects - and of course exposure at an early age helps. "
Perhaps I was deluding myself when I'd held on to the belief that hard work was more important than intelligence. I'm wrong. I'm not saying hard work is redundant - it is important, but the hard fact is - if you don't have the smarts, you're disadvantaged. That's right - while you're studying like hell for a certain subject, some other smart alec just flips through his notes and - poof - he easily aces the test.
I wonder what would happen if the world was turned upside down - where smarts didn't matter. Where academic qualifications don't matter. You may point out to me that, indeed, in this age academic qualifications are not top priority. Honestly - you believe that? It's really up to you to interpret. But being the cynical dudette I am most of the time... I refuse to believe that they don't look at your qualifications at all.
Perhaps I am in dire need of encouragement/enlightenment/inspiration.
